Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty is Totally Crumbling Victoria’s Secret

“Sexy is not a body type but a state of mind.”

Style icon, makeup entrepreneur, and the first black woman to head a luxury brand under LVMH, AND as the wealthiest female musician in the world, Rihanna is no stranger to successfully disrupting a market. Last year at her debut Savage X Fenty NYFW show, models of ALL shapes, sizes took the runway by storm and this year showed no signs of that slowing down. She even incorporated transgender models and models with disabilities within her presentation. No wings, no theatrics. Just body positivity and women owing their beauty.

Standards of beauty have tremendously changed in the last couple of years and we have Savage X Fenty to thank for that. Rihanna has officially disrupted markets causing brands with “antiquated” views of beauty, *cough* Victoria’s Secret, to scramble in regards to re-evaluating their brand.

Representation of the female body in fashion has always been marketed as the standard: Caucasian model, tall, blond, and thin. Occasionally you can find a sprinkle of women of different ethnicities but with almost the same characteristics. The problem is evident, when you have a male dominated executive board running the brand, you’re bound see skewed standards of beauty through the eyes of men. Through the power of social media as many other brands do, Fenty utilized the low cost effort of marketing, user generated content, to show followers, spectators, and competitors that these are what REAL bodies look like.

Is Savage X Fenty giving them a run for their money? Is it too late for VS to make a comeback? Victoria’s Secret is currently doing damage control by working to improve its quality control of bras, partnerships, playing with a new aesthetic through marketing efforts, etc. They’ve even gone as far as not airing their annual fashion show for the first time in years due to a decline in low ratings. A spokeswoman of L Brands stated “We’re re-evaluating the fashion show. We are taking time to evaluate the right marketing strategy going forward.”

Tune into the second annual Savage X Fenty fashion show, streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime on Friday September 20th. The show is packed with performances by Rihanna, Migos, A$AP Ferg, Tierra Whack and more, in addition to your favorite supermodels gracing the runway.

The Highly Anticipated Gucci x Dapper Dan Collection Has Arrived

The story of Dapper Dan and Gucci can be seen as love-hate. From ripping each other off to finally putting their differences aside, over the course of a year the legendary courtier and Gucci have been working together to bring you this collaborative collection.

Flying Dapper Dan to Italy, helping him with the launch of his Harlem atelier and even featuring him in its tailoring ad campaign, Gucci pounced on the opportunity to bring him on board. The highly coveted collection, previously available exclusively at the Gucci store on Wooster St. in NYC, has made its way online. Today marks the day fashionistas worldwide can now get their hands on pieces from this iconic collection.

Inspired by the streets of Harlem, the collection is full archival pieces with a Gucci twist. Ranging from a mix of 300+ pieces of leather goods, footwear, apparel and more, the collection is officially available to shop at Gucci.com

Capturing the perfect harmony of the Italian fashion house, and Dapper Dan’s Harlem roots,  photographer Ari Marcopulo tells a story that “explores the synergy between the magpie design philosophies of both Dan and Michele [Creative Director at Gucci].”

Paparazzi Campaigns: Balenciaga vs Yeezy

Over the last 72 hours our feeds have been filled with photos of Balenciaga and Yeezy Season 6 campaign photos. Both brands have taken the paparazzi-style approach to advertise their new Spring 2018 collections and the internet is in a frenzy.

Kim Kardashian-West for Yeezy Season 6

Was Demna inspired by Kanye? Based on timing it seems so. Eventhough both campaigns are similar there are definitely many contrasting characteristics between the two.

The Yeezy Season 6 campaign features Kim, along with other models such as Amina Blue, The Clermont Twins, Sami Miro, Kristen Noel Crawley and Paris Hilton.  Photos depicted models, practically clones of Kim, doing simple, casual. every day activities; walking, exiting cars and buildings, grabbing a coffee and ice cream, getting gas..yeah simple.

As for Balenciaga, a more “realistic” approach was taken. Models Stella Tennant, Dipti Sharma, Kennah Lau, Marjitta Nissinen, Eliza Douglas, Christine Willis, Alek Wek, Raphaele Godin and her son – all pose just as any celeb would among a swarm of paparazzi, rushing to their vehicle with a very prominent logo bag shielding their face.

Wanna know a fun fact? This campaign was shot by actual French paparazzi, Best Image Agency, outside of the Balenciaga store in Paris.

Overall this is a genius roll out by both fashion houses. Consumers are looking at paparazzi photos just about everyday whether online, scrolling down their feeds, or even in the paper. So why not feed into the worlds obsession of staying on the pulse of their favorite celebs and fashion brands.

Footwear Nostalgia: Chunky Sneakers You Love to Hate

The 90s are back in a MAJOR way as of late. Nostalgia is definitely a driving force in fashion, people love to live in a reverie of when things were great, aka their childhood. Brands are taking notes and are creating a resurgence of fashions from back in the day.

The only chunky sole I can bear to stand are lug sole booties, however others beg to differ. The release of Balenciaga’s Triple-S was the start of it all…for me at least. As a child I despised chunky sneakers so the sight of them now makes me cringe, but its what the people want!

Then the Eytys Angel sneaker was donned upon us….now if I had to choose I’d prefer these over the Triple-S any day. Maybe its because of the options they come in like shiny leather, monochrome suede or the two tone sole? I don’t know but..you decide.

As if that wasn’t enough, consumers just keep wanting more and more! Now Buffalo trainers are back! If growing up you were a Spice Girls fanatic like I was, you’d recognize these sneakers in a heartbeat. Being re-released in black and white colorways, these shoes already have a serious waiting list.

Those of you who are into the ugly sneaker trend then these are right up your alley. Itching to get your hands on these? They will be available starting today,  in stores and online, at Browns in the UK.

Rihanna Announced to Host 2018 Met Gala and We’re Not Invited

Rihanna alongside of Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace will be hosing one of the most sought out, star-studded events of the year, the 2018 Met Gala. This annual event is hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Its purpose? An annual fundraising gala to benefit the museum’s Costume Institute, whilst signifying the grand opening of its fashion exhibit. These three women have been selected as honorary chairs of the event by head chair and Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. April seems so far but the planning is under way!

Every year the event celebrates the theme for the Costume Institute exhibit and guests are highly encouraged to come dressed accordingly. “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” was confirmed to be this years theme. After months of speculation and backlash Vogue states the event will “highlight the enduring influence of religion and liturgical vestments on fashion.” Papal garb on loan from the Sistine Chapel, along with 150 other catholic garments, will be one of the many highlights of the exhibit.

The industry premier red carpet cocktail hour is one of the most important parts of the night. 225 approved photographers, reporters and digital artists will all be documenting/ covering the who’s who and the question on everyone’s mind “Who are you wearing?” As the night progresses attendees are invited to peruse the themed exhibit and finally head to their seats to start the dinner party.

This high-profile event is a day on the fashion calendar that no one wants to miss. Will controversy arise? Absolutely! Mixing fashion and religion will always be seen as sacrilegious, but isn’t fashion all about pushing boundaries and taking risks? Well we’ll all be tuned in April 30th to see how celebs uphold the theme of the year.

Best and Worst Shoes of Paris Fashion Week

Fashion month has come to a close and it’s time to recap some of the coolest and ehh not so cool shoes of Paris fashion week.

Aside from the amazing set design from the Chanel show, Karl unveiled transparency within his spring collection.

These clear, plastic rain boots were shown in a variety of sizes and styles from thigh high, to mid-calf length. Seems like last seasons perspex trend will still be in.

Another one of my favorites this season was the Balmain thigh high moto leather peep toe boot.

Another popular one I’m sure all of you have seen is the Off-White x Jimmy Choo collaboration.

Is Amazon The Next Big Bad Wolf In Fashion?

Find. A name you’ll be seeing all over…maybe? Amazon launches their first in house fashion brand, with a whopping 500 womenswear pieces and 200 styles for men. Cosmo calls it a mash up between “Finery and Topshop only with some seriously affordable prices.”

I headed on over to Amazon to view the collection and to my surprise it wasn’t what I thought it would be. Lots of basics in neutral tones, pleats, and velvet textures. I did stumble upon some gems as I thought to myself I’d definitely buy that, but the more I scrolled the less enthused I was. However Telegraph states,

“What might surprise the fashion industry is that Amazon’s collection isn’t a bargain-basement attempt to undercut rivals on the price of basic T-shirts. Instead it is challenging rivals with more fashion-forward items: patent boots cost £56 ($72), high-waisted skinny jeans are priced at £26 ($34), while a checked blazer is £40 ($52).

It’s their first go-around so I see why they played it safe. I can definitely say that 99% of the collection is great for layering. More for the minimalist in you.

Find. has launched exclusively in the UK. While this is the first in house fashion brand for Amazon, the company has also quietly released 8 private label brands ranging in categories from food, fashion, beauty, and home.

Talk about one stop shop! Amazon is stopping at nothing to gain that consumer loyalty. To check out Find. click here, you’ll never know you might find something you love.
